First Minister Alex Salmond outlines his ambitions for a Celtic Lion economy to emerge in Scotland as he addresses Harvard University’s Center for European Studies and Harvard Business School.

Mr. Salmond sets out his vision to transform Scotland’s recent economic performance and replicate the success of Ireland’s Celtic Tiger. Highlighting the success of Europe’s smaller countries - which have dramatically outperformed their larger neighbors - Mr. Salmond’s message was delivered on the eve of a business tax cut that will see Scotland become even more competitive. His speech at Harvard opened a week of travels by Mr. Salmond and his ministers across the United States and Canada that will underscore that Scotland is open for business and flourishing, and that an independent Scotland could well be the next European economic miracle.

This session grows out of an interest in how popular culture in general and film culture specifically was experienced in the pre-Wall divided Berlin of the 1950s. With open borders and competing film offerings from West Germany and the U.S. in West Berlin and DEFA and the Soviet Union in the East, how were Berliners uniquely positioned within the early Cold War? How did filmmaking and film-going practices defy political alliances and allow for ideological transgressions? What opportunities existed for East-West narratives and co-productions? To what extent can we claim that these films and Berlin’s unique cultural political landscape contributed to a sense of German national unity?
